The Area

Dundee was originally in “Forfarshire” – now known as Angus and Dundee and fairly central to any travel north or south being approximately one hour from each of the main Cities of Scotland.
Dundee is joined to Fife by the Tay Bridge which leads to lovely fishing villages down the East Neuk of Fife and of course many golf courses and the Home of Golf at St. Andrews.

Dundee itself was known historically for its whaling, shipbuilding, jute, jam, and journalism; that being DC Thomson and the famous Beano and Dandy comics.

The jute mill called Verdant Works is a working museum showing the process of producing sacking used in the old days for bags and backing to carpets.

“The Discovery” which was built in Dundee sits on the waterfront which is the scientific research ship that Captain Scott and his crew sailed to the Antartic in.

Close by at City Quay and also on the water is H.M.Frigate Unicorn which is the oldest British built warship still afloat.

It should also be known that William Wallace is believed to have gone to School in Dundee
There are many castles in the area closest is Broughty Castle which was built in 1496 and over the years faced many sieges and battles. There is Edzel Castle, Dunottar Castle, and of course Glamis Castle the childhood home of our late Queen Mother.

Since late 19thC, Dundee has been a popular tourist area because of it’s central location but was probably originated by QueenVictoria setting up her summer residence in Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands
There are many Pictish Stones in the area to visit and at Montrose Basin a large bird and wildlife sanctuary.
Dundee although noted for engineering is also famous for innovations and in the 19thC it was Marmalade, X-ray techniques, electric light and later development of Asprin by a medic at the Dundee Royal Infirmary. Now the Dundee universities have recognition in life sciences and environmental research in computer arts and creative arts at the famous Duncan of Jordanstone Art School.

Going forward in the 21stC the area has recently approved of a whole regeneration of the waterfront not least the
V_&_A Museum being the centrefold with a stunning design for an iconic building.
